Third bridge to Mactan is a done deal: Sitoy
By Elias O. Baquero
Wednesday, June 11, 2014
CORDOVA, Cebu Mayor Adelino Sitoy yesterday said the groundbreaking of the third bridge that will link Mactan Island and Cebu City has been set in January 2015 and the bridge will be operational three years after.
Sitoy said that he Metro Pacific Investment Corp. (MPIC) of businessman Manny Pangilinan will spend P15 billion to construct the bridge from Barangay Pilipog to Shell Island and impose a toll of from P50 to P100 per vehicle to recover the cost.
The toll rate is regardless of whether a vehicle is carrying passengers and cargo or not.
The project is viable, Sitoy said, because an average of 82,000 vehicles are passing the two existing bridges daily, and still increasing.
If the third bridge will be realized, it will be easier for motorists from Cebu City and the rest of southern Cebu to go to Cordova and the Mactan Cebu International Airport.
Shared cost
The cost of the portion from Shell Island to Cebu City will be shared between MPIC and the Cebu City Government.
Sitoy said they will rename Shell Island into Isla Trece Una-Una, which is about four kilometers from Cordova mainland. Shell Island is only 520 meters (or a little more than half kilometer) from Cebu City.
He said MPIC Vice President Mon Fernandez and MPIC counsel Aristotle Batuhan are in Cebu and have been conducting project briefings.
Sitoy said the other morning, Fernandez and Batuhan conducted a briefing before members of the group that advocated Mega Cebu. In the afternoon, they met with Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama.
Yesterday, Sitoy said, MPIC officials lunch meeting with the group of Cebu Gov. Hilario Davide III, represented by lawyer Mark Tolentino; and Cordova officials headed by him, at Marco Polo Plaza.
“This bridge project is a one hundred percent a done deal. Go, go go,” Sitoy said.
Name
Sitoy said that as far as the Cordovahanons are concerned, they will call it Cordova Bridge. But because they have no agreement with Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama, they may settle for “Sitoy-Rama” Bridge.
